A Season of Balance, Gratitude & Gentle Release
As the days begin to shorten and the light softens into gold, we arrive at the Autumn Equinox – a moment of perfect balance between day and night.
It is less about dramatic ritual and more about noticing. It is a time to pause and reflect and to ask ourselves:
- What has grown in my life over the past 6 months?
- What feels abundant?
- What feels complete?
- What am I ready to let go of?
This is a season of quiet honesty.
WHAT THE AUTUMN EQUINOX REPRESENTS
The Equinox is one of the two points in the year when light and dark are equal. It is a reminder that balance is not something we achieve permanently – it is something we return to.
In nature, we see:
- Leaves are beginning to dry and fall
- Gardens offering their final harvest
- Seeds forming for future growth
- Animals preparing for cooler months
Energetically, this season supports:
- Gratitude
- Grounding
- Reflection
- Emotional Recalibration
- Letting go of what feels heavy
A SIMPLE AUTUMN EQUINOX PRACTICE (NO FUSS REQUIRED)
You don’t need rare herbs, elaborate tools, or a perfectly curated altar. Try this instead;

1. take a grounding walk
Visit the beach, a park or your garden.
Notice the air on your skin
Listen to the birds and their songs
Watch how the light falls differently now
Let your body feel the season changing.

2. make a gratitude list
Write down:
- 5 Things that have grown in your life since spring
- 3 Things you are proud of
- 1 Thing you are ready to release
Keep it simple, honest and real.

3. release something small
This could be:
- Clearing a cupboard
- Finishing a project
- Letting go of a resentment
- Stepping back from something that quietly drains your energy
Autumn supports completion.
WORKING WITH BALANCE
Because day and night are equal, this is a powerful time to look at how your own life is balanced. Ask yourself:
“Where am I overextending?:
It might look like:
- Saying yes to things you don’t really have the energy for
- Answering messages late at night when you’re exhausted
- Taking responsibility for other people’s emotions
- Filling every spare moment instead of resting
- Pouring into work, family, or commitments without refilling yourself
Autumn gently reminds us that constant output is not sustainable.
“Where am I withdrawing?:
This can be subtler. It might look like:
- Avoiding conversations that need to happen
- Pulling back from something because you feel failure
- Numbing out with scrolling instead of engaging
- Saying “I’m just tired” when something deeper feels off
- Hiding your ideas, voice or creativity
Withdrawing isn’t always bad; sometimes it’s rest. The key is to notice whether it feels nourishing, protective, or something else entirely.
“What feels out of alignment?:
This often shows up as a quiet discomfort.
- A routine that once felt exciting, now feels heavy
- A friendship that feels one-sided
- A goal that doesn’t fit who you are anymore
- A pace of life that feels rushed or disconnected
- A version of yourself you’ve outgrown
Autumn is the season that allows us to admit these truths without judgement. It is about gentle honesty.
You might light a candle at sunset and simply sit in stillness for 5-10 minutes. No chanting, no pressure, just awareness. Balance begins with noticing when you feel overextended or off kilter.
BRINGING AUTUMN INTO YOUR HOME
Small seasonal shifts help anchor the energy.
- A flower arrangement of Banksia, Eucalypt branches, Geraldton Wax or Everlastings in an earthen or glass vase
- A fruit bowl filled with apples and pears on the kitchen table or bench
- Warm-toned decor: rust, amber, deep green throw cushions, bowls or candles
- Light incense or oils that feel grounding, such as cedarwood, clove, patchouli

AS THE SEASON TURNS
The Autumn Equinox is not about perfection; it is about presence.
As the light softens, and evenings grow cooler, slow down, take stock, be grateful.
Release what feels heavy and trust that what falls away gives room for more growth in the coming year.
Within the Wheel of the Year, the Autumn Equinox is celebrated as Mabon. If you’d like to explore this seasonal celebration further, I’ve created a guide in my Grimoire that shares Mabon symbolism, altar ideas, candle colours, and seasonal foods to help you honour this time of year in your own way.
