Cleansing your crystals: A beginners guide

Crystals absorb the energies of their surroundings – both positive and negative. Over time, these energies can dull their natural frequency and make them less effective. Regular cleansing restores their pure vibration, allowing them to work at their highest potential.

WHY DO I NEED TO CLEANSE MY CRYSTALS?

As crystals interact with people and environments, they can accumulate stagnant or negative energy. Cleansing helps them return to their natural, high-vibrational state so they can continue supporting your wellbeing.

When a crystal becomes energetically “clogged,” it may feel heavy, dull, or even pass that stagnant energy on to you. Cleansing keeps their energy clear and radiant.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I CLEANSE MY CRYSTALS?

As a general rule, cleanse your crystals at least once a month, or more often if they are used frequently in rituals, carried daily, or handled by others. Trust your intuition – if a crystal feels “off” or less vibrant, it’s time for a cleanse.

HOW TO CLEANSE YOUR CRYSTALS

There are many ways to cleanse your crystals, and it’s perfectly fine to experiment. Choose the methods that feel most natural and cost-effective for you:

Full moonlight

One of the most powerful, and cost effective, ways to cleanse and recharge your crystals is to leave them outside overnight, under the light of a full moon. Be sure to collect your crystals in the morning as extended exposure to sunlight can damage and fade certain crystals.

smudging (smoke cleansing)

Use a sage or palo santo smudge stick to cleanse your crystals by passing them through the smoke of the burning smudge stick. Generally, you should hold each crystal in the smoke for 15 to 30 seconds.

sound

Singing bowls, crystal bowls, tuning forks, bells and chimes can be used to wash your crystals in sound vibrations.

Tip: High-pitched sounds work best for clearing and re-energising their frequencies. For example, when using a singing bowl, use a smaller bowl as it produces a higher pitched sound than a large bowl.

water (use with care)

Hold your crystals under cool running water, visualizing the negative energies being washed away. Avoid water for soft or soluble stones like selenite, malachite, and calcite.

salt water bath (use with caution)

Dissolve sea salt or rock salt in water and submerge your crystals for a few hours or overnight. Be sure to fully rinse the crystals under cool running water afterwards and leave them to air dry. (Not all crystals are water safe, and some are damaged by salt water. It is important to check before using this method)

earth

Bury your crystals in a bowl of soil (or directly in the earth) for 24-48 hours to ground and purify them. Longer burial can offer a deeper cleanse.

selenite

Selenite is a self-cleansing crystal that also purifies others. Place your crystals on a selenite slab, bowl or wand for at least 24-hours to refresh their energy.

intuitive cleansing

Listen to your intuition, and trust it. Your crystals will often “tell” you when they need attention. You may feel drawn to a certain cleansing method at different times.

A NOTE ON INTENTION

No matter which method you choose, the most important part of cleansing is your intention. As you cleanse, hold a clear thought such as “I release all stagnant energy and restore this crystal to its pure light.”

MAGICKAL TIP

Keep a small “cleansing station” in your home – a moon bowl, incense dish, or selenite plate – so crystal care becomes part of your sacred routine.
